Free snow reports on your iPhone
09/02/2010
There can be few things worse than arriving at a ski resort and finding brown fields where you expected to see lots of the white stuff. When that happens, all you can do is wish you'd checked the snow report before leaving home.
One of the best ways to avoid such a disappointing start to you holiday is to book at the last minute, when you know where the snow is falling and which resort has the best weather forecast for your week away.
Now, thanks to the Snow Club of Great Britain and Land Rover, you can get free snow reports from 250 ski resorts delivered straight to your iPhone, meaning you could be one of the first to the slopes when fresh powder is forecast.
Download the App from itunes and you'll also get snow depths, on and off piste conditions as well as webcams and all the latest ski and snowboarding news.
The Ski Club says the data is the most accurate and up-to-date around, making it ideal for skiers and snowboarders when they are in the resort too.
Another newbie for winter sports enthusiasts is the pocket-sized Snowfinder guidebook, published this month.
So far there are guides to the four biggest ski areas in France, Les Trois Vallees, Espace Killy, Portes du Soleil and Paradiski.
Designed for use on the mountain, the guides combine full colour piste maps with individual descriptions of each run to help skiers plan their day on the slopes. Written by a team of top skiers, including BBC presenter Graham Bell, the also include insider tips on where to find the best powder, mountain restaurants and après ski.
