34bn spent on holidays
18/01/2008
British people will spend over £34 billion on holidays abroad this year with the average person spending £514, a new report has revealed.
The price of a holiday per day can be higher for people holidaying in Europe than people travelling long haul, according to research by Alliance and Leicester.
Of the top ten countries where we spend the most per day six are in Europe, including Latvia, Finland and Belgium, with Iceland topping the list with an average spend of £118 per day.
However Australia and New Zealand were the countries in which people spend the most, costing the average family of four £8,120 for a six week holiday.
Richard Al-Dabbagh, Alliance and Leicester personal loans manager, said: "Holidays are meant to be a time of enjoyment but often the cost of going abroad, especially for a family, can be quite substantial."
A two week holiday for four in America costs on average just under £4,000, and the average person spends almost £42,000 on holidays in their lifetime.
Recent information from the Civil Aviation Authority showed that more people are choosing to depart from regional airports with only 58 per cent of all flights going from London airports.
