Abta - Tourism firms must reduce emissions

09/04/2008

Tourism firm have been told that they must "be as responsible as they can" in terms of reducing their carbon emissions, this week.

According to the Association of British travel Agents (Abta), holiday companies should make an effort to "reduce the negative impact" they may be having on the environment, as well as the communities they operate trips to.

Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for the Abta said: "Going to a theme park isn't green but there are things that those attractions can do to minimise their impact."

He added that both tour operators and tourists will have to rethink their green priorities "for both cost and environmental reasons".

According to research conducted by Mintel in March 2007, long-haul foreign holidays were up by 41 per cent.

Furthermore, a poll undertaken by impartial hotel review website TripAdvisor, found that in April 2007 34 per cent of holidaymakers said that they would pay more to stay at an environmentally-friendly hotel.

Another 38 per cent claimed they would fork out the extra cash to take an eco-friendly flight.
