Airport strikes called off

04/01/2008

Airport staff have called off the three planned strikes which had been due to bring delays and disruption for UK travellers.

Up to 5,000 staff at seven airports, including emergency workers, had been due to stage three strikes this month in protest over terms of a pension scheme.

However, the Unite union, which was acting behalf of the disgruntled staff, has now announced that an agreement has been reached and the strikes are called off.

A spokesperson for BAA confirmed the news in a statement: "We welcome the announcement by trade unions today that an agreement has been reached and all proposed industrial action has been cancelled. This is good news for our passengers and airline customers."

The threat of delays to airports has not yet cleared entirely however with Virgin Atlantic cabin crew set to down tools for two 24-hour strikes on January 9th and 16th.
