ASA upholds Lastminute.com's complaint

17/10/2007

An advertising watchdog has criticised RyanAir for claiming that Lastminute.com were "robbers" who were ripping off their customers.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld four complaints after RyanAir ran an advertising campaign which featured the strapline "robbed by lastminute.com?"

Underneath the slogan was a cartoon illustration of a burglar.

The advert also included the claim that the website overcharged customers by "100 per cent or more" and that the real terms and conditions of deals were concealed from customers.

RyanAir defended its claims on the grounds that lastminute.com inflated the prices without their consent and without informing passengers.

ASA officials ruled that RyanAir had failed to back up its claims and had consequently misled the public.

RyanAir has also been forbidden from running the advert again.
