BA hikes ticket prices

British Airways' passengers face a further ticket hike, as the carrier responds to rising oil prices, it has been reported.

The hike, the third such levied this year, will see passengers pay an extra £15 for long-haul flights, which are deemed to be those of nine hours duration or more.

Meanwhile, medium-haul tickets will go up by £10, while the price short-haul flights will increase by £2.

The new price points will be place as of November 15th.

Robert Boyle, British Airways commercial director, said that the move had come as a result of oil prices hitting levels that made the existing pricing system untenable.

He said: "The cost of oil has reached record levels, rising by more than $20 per barrel since we last increased our fuel surcharge in June 2007."

Other airlines are now also expected to follow suit, according to Andrew Lobbenberg analyst with Dutch investment bank ABN Amro.

He told the Guardian: "Eventually, I would expect all the airlines to move on fuel surcharges."
