"Backpackers" outnumber "tourists"

The increasing popularity of adventure holidays has been provided by a new survey showing that a quarter of young travellers consider themselves to be backpackers.

According to figures from the World Student & Educational Travel Confederation's (WSETC) magazine New Horizon, some 25 per cent referred to themselves as backpackers.

This compares with just 23 per cent who describe their attitude to travel as that of a tourist.

The highest concentration of respondents opting for the 'backpacker' tag were found to be travelling through destinations traditionally popular with backpackers including India, Asia and Australia.

A separate study from the WSETC recently confirmed that northern and southern Europe are increasingly emerging as travel hotspots for young people and backpackers, with over half of those quizzed having visited that part of the world on their travels.
