Bank Holiday Strike at Stansted: What does travel insurance cover?

16/08/2013

As unions and bosses at Stansted conduct talks in an attempt to stop a planned strike by baggage scanners over the bank holiday weekend we thought it would be a good time to highlight what cover travel insurance can provide if your holiday is affected by industrial action.

The strike at Stansted is scheduled to take place between 03.30 - 6.00 and 15.30 - 18.00 for 4 days over the August bank holiday weekend.

If you are concerned that your flight may be affected by the strike you should contact your airline for the latest information.

Travel insurance for strikes

If your flight is delayed by strike action you may have cover under the Travel Delay and Abandonment sections of your travel insurance, provided that your holiday was booked and your travel insurance purchased before the strike dates were announced.

Travel Delay takes the form of a fixed benefit which is designed to help cover extra expenses, such as food and drink, whilst you wait at the airport. You can make a claim for between £10 (silver policies) and £50 (platinum policies) per person for every 12 hours that you are delayed.

Abandonment Cover means that in the event your flight is delayed by more than 24 hours you have the option to ‘abandon' your holiday and make a claim for unrecoverable costs up to £1000 per person on silver policies, £3000 per person on gold and £7,500 per person on Platinum policies.

Abandonment Cover enables you to rebook your holiday for another time if you decide that a 24 hour delay has eaten into your holiday time too much and you would prefer not to travel.

For full details of the Travel Delay and Abandonment cover provided by your travel insurance please read your policy wording.
