Britains most romantic hotels

09/10/2009

A mini-break is often all that's needed to rekindle a romance, particularly if you stay in the right hotel. Here are some of Britain's finest, but none of them come cheap so make sure you've got cover for cancellations and other eventualities by taking out travel insurance if you are booking for two nights or more.

Cliveden (www.clivedenhouse.co.uk) in Berkshire, once a grand stately home, has already kindled many a high-profile love affair ? and the odd scandalous relationship. Indeed, it was here that John Profumo, the former Secretary of State of War, fell for model Christine Keeler causing public ? who just happened to be involved with a Russian.

Push all that history aside and you're left with luxurious rooms and discreet but attentive service. Stay in the estate's Spring Cottage on the banks of the River Thames, which comes with its own butler.

Foodies should check into the Vineyard (www.the-vineyard.co.uk) in Newbury which boasts not one but two Michelin stars. Couples should also check out the spa and, if budgets allow, stay in one of the two Grand Suites which come with four-poster beds, free standing baths and walk-in showers.

One of the most romantic city centre hotels is Threadneedles (www.theetoncollection.com) in the heart of London. You'll feel more like a house guest than a hotel resident in this posh pad, which has been converted from a Victorian banking hall.

All 70 bedrooms have big beds dressed in fine linen, from where you can watch the plasma TV or listen to music from the ipod docking station. Make it as far as the balcony and you'll have a bird's eye view of the City.
