Britons flock to Egypt for school half term holiday
21/10/2009
If you are heading to Egypt for the half-term holiday you are likely to be in good company as one travel agent says it has seen a phenomenal increase in bookings for the Red Sea destination this year.
The Co-operative Travel said bookings to the resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh were up 142 per cent year on year for the half-term holiday.
It put the rapid increase down to a significant drop in the cost of holidays to the Red Sea resort. A package for a family holiday has fallen 20 per cent this year from an average of £2,394 to an average of £1,898.
At the same time, packages to other popular half-term holiday destinations have gone up in price, largely due to the fall in the value of the pound against the euro.
A half-term holiday package to Tenerife in the Canary Islands, always a popular winter sun destination due to almost guaranteed warm weather and short flight times, has risen more than 14 per cent year on year.
As the pound continues to be weak against the euro - this week £1 will buy you just 1.1€ - holidaymakers are looking beyond the eurozone for the best half-term holiday bargains.
Sharm-el-Sheikh not only offers cheaper packages than some European destinations, according to The Co-operative Travel, but also offers good quality all-inclusive hotels, which offer better value than half-board and self-catering breaks and they make it easier for families to budget.
