Britons risk invalidating their travel insurance

07/05/2009

New research has found that 1.2m British holidaymakers travel abroad without informing their travel insurers of pre-existing medical conditions.

Worryingly, a further half a million Britons with medical problems go on holiday with no holiday insurance cover whatsoever.

An alarming report, commissioned by Sainsbury's Finance, estimates that more than a quarter of a million people with heart conditions fail to inform their holiday insurers about their problem while more than 2m keep respiratory problems secret from their insurance company.

Almost half a million holidaymakers take out travel insurance without declaring that they suffer from severe back pain, while hundreds of thousands travel with cancer, diabetes and other medical problems without telling their insurers.

Many may fear they will not be able to get holiday insurance if they own up to pre-existing conditions, but this is not the case. Travel insurance is available for most medical conditions, but withholding important medical information could render an insurance policy invalid.

Fear of increased premiums is another reason why some people with pre-existing conditions choose not to reveal their medical history to their holiday insurance company, but failing to do so could land them with huge medical bills if they become ill and need treatment abroad.
