Brits are travelling abroad uninsured, says report

14/08/2008

One in four Brits plan to travel abroad this summer without any travel insurance, one expert has said.

Recent research from Sainsbury's travel Insurance has revealed that the worst-offending age group for this is those aged between 55 and 64-years old, with 32 per cent of those surveyed in this group not taking out cover this summer.

Steve Johnson head of insurance at Sainsbury's Finance said: "It's extremely concerning to see how many people are neglecting to take out insurance when going away on holiday."

He explained that travel insurance is necessary as if something were to happen to a member of a holidaymaker's family while they were abroad the insurance policy would take "care of things".

This might mean reimbursing the traveller for medical costs, or paying out when a valuable items is stolen.

Earlier this week the Foreign & Commonwealth Office urged Brits not to abandon their travel insurance policies in a bid to save cash.

A report released by the government body found that two thirds of holidaymakers will be spending less on travel preparations such as insurance this summer.
