Brits complain of dirty bathrooms

05/10/2009

More than 10 per cent of people who holiday in the UK are unhappy with hygiene standards, according to a new survey by Which? Holiday.

Dirty baths and showers are by far the biggest cause for complaint, although many grumble about unhygienic toilets and badly cleaned carpets in their hotel rooms.

The latest edition of the Which? Holiday magazine (www.which.co.uk) features the results of the survey in which almost 1000 people who have stayed in a hotel in Britain in the past five years were questioned.

More than one in 10 of those who responded said the standards of hygiene had failed to meet their expectations.

Almost two out of every three people who had cause for complaint did so, with some even demanding to see the hotel manager to express their discontent.

The remaining third said they couldn't be bothered to complain or they thought it was pointless because nothing would be done.

So what should you do if you are not satisfied with your hotel room? Complain immediately is the best advice, don't wait until you get back home.

Call the hotel's guest services number and if you get no joy ask to speak with the general manager.

Give the hotel the opportunity to clean your room to a satisfactory standard or move you to an alternative room that has been adequately cleaned.

Getting a refund or compensation once you have left the hotel is much more difficult, but if you are refused help while you are there take photographs or a video of the room to assist you with your complaint
