Brits failing to make travel insurance claims

08/11/2007

British holidaymakers are not making claims on their travel insurance policies, despite the validity of their claim, it has been revealed.

According to statistics from the Post Office, seven out of Britons do not make a claim for holiday mishaps.

This is attributable in part to the profusion of travel policies with an excess that is higher than expected, according to head of Post Office travel services Helen Warburton - who warned holidaymakers against such policies.

She said: "Holidaymakers really must wake up to cheap policies with very high excess levels. They may seem like a great deal at the time but if an excess is set at £250, it may make little or no financial sense to try and claim for things like lost luggage, flight delays, doctors' expenses, lost cameras and more.

"Ultimately, that means that you end up paying twice - once for the policy and then again for anything that goes wrong."

Other reasons given by travellers for failing to make a claim were that claiming was too much hassle and a lack of awareness that their policies covered them for a particular incident.
