Brits opt for Christmas abroad
03/10/2007
More and more Britons are opting to spend Christmas in balmier foreign climes, new research reveals.
According to figures from travel search engine Kayak, 75 per cent of us plan on leaving Britain over Christmas, with 43 per cent saying that the lure of sunny weather was the chief draw.
Annie Wilson, business development director of Kayak, said that the trend can be attributed to the floods and inclement weather that lashed Britain over the summer.
She said: "The great British summer has been a washout this year, so who can blame us sun-starved Brits for wanting to escape to sunnier shores?
"Christmas is traditionally a time for staying at home, but sometimes you just need to break with tradition and let someone else cook and clean while you catch some much needed rays. It looks like it will be a sandy Santa that visits many of us this year, and he might want to swap his sleigh for a surfboard."
Kayak's findings coincide with the release of a separate study from Barclays Travel Insurance showing that Melbourne was the top location for Brits absconding from the country over Christmas.
