Budget flights boost long-haul destinations
08/10/2007
Britons are increasingly opting to take short breaks in long-haul destinations, it has been claimed.
According to a spokesman for the Association of British Travel Agents, the numbers of holidaymakers opting for mini-breaks in far-flung locales has grown as flying becomes more and more affordable.
The spokesperson said: "In the responsible tourism field, people would rather go to long-haul destinations for longer periods of time, rather than short breaks. But there has been a market recently for people to go for two weeks and sometimes even less, depending on where it is.
"I have heard of short breaks to Cairo and Las Vegas, where people go for a long weekend. People also go on shopping day-trips to New York."
News of the comments from ABTA come as AirAsia X, the Malaysia-based budget long haul airline, is starting to operate a wide variety of long haul flights for destinations around the world.
