Check insurance before skiing
16/01/2008
Getting the right insurance and checking what your policy covers is essential before going on a ski holiday.
Defaqto, the financial research company, warns that various problems can occur for the thousands of British people who will go skiing this year that some insurance policies may not cover.
Losing equipment, injuries to yourself and avalanches are some of the problems travellers should ensure they are covered against before buying winter sports travel insurance.
Mike Powell, principal consultant for general insurance at Defaqto, said: "In this time of disturbed weather patterns, it's worth checking you have realistic cover for piste closure and travel to an alternative location."
He also warned that by adding a winter sports option to a single trip policy people can expect to pay more than buying a standard winter sports policy and that frequent skiers, even making trips twice a year may save money by buying an annual policy.
Nearly 80 per cent of polices will pay some compensation in the event of an avalanche delaying your travel arrangements, with one company paying a whopping £1,000.
