Don't jump! FCO warns of increasing incidents of balcony falls

15/08/2012

There have been 13 incidents of young British holidaymakers being killed or seriously injured after falling from balconies whilst on holiday this year.

In Majorca and Ibiza, two top destinations for British youngsters, there have been 9 cases of balcony falls - already equalling the number in 2011 despite only being half way through the season.

The majority of incidents involve young people aged 18-35 and alcohol often pays a part. Unfortunately many young holidaymakers often go away without travel insurance, which risks themselves or their parents being faced with large medical bills.

In response to this rise in balcony falls, The Foreign Office (FCO) and ABTA - The Travel Association, have joined forces to help prevent balcony incidents among young people in popular holiday resorts. Young people travelling out to popular resorts will be given leaflets which include the story of 18 year old Jake Evans who narrowly survived a fall from a 7th floor balcony.

Paul Abrey, Consul in the Balearics, said: “We've already seen some tragic cases this summer which have had devastating consequences for the individuals and families concerned. This year there's been a particular spike early on in the holiday season with figures already matching last year's.

Some people have fallen whilst climbing to a friend's apartment, others have simply lost their footing after a few too many drinks and a few have deliberately jumped off aiming for the pool below.

It should go without saying these practices are extremely dangerous and can cost them their life or leave them permanently disabled. Many young people also arrive without travel insurance. The FCO can't pay medical bills and holidaymakers may end up paying out thousands for medical bills and flights back to the UK.”

The advice provided to young people heading abroad this summer by the FCO and ABTA aims to help them use their balconies more safely and prevent more of these tragic and avoidable incidents.

Although it is important to take care on holiday, as you would at home, accidents can still happen so having comprehensive travel insurance every time you go away is vital.
