East Midlands Airport scoops top award

22/11/2007

In a move that confirms the ongoing rise of regional airports, Nottingham/East Midlands Airport (EMA) has been awarded airport of the year at this year's World Travel Awards.

In the week that it was confirmed that over one hundred million passengers now pass through the UK's regional airports annually, the midlands' airport beat out larger hubs to be named the UK's best.

Major transport hubs did not go totally unrecognised at the ceremony, however, with Gatwick picking up the gong for top UK base for leisure travel.

Meanwhile, there was also good news for Heathrow, which picked up the award for favourite UK airport for business travel.

Penny Coates, managing director of EMA, said: "2007 has been an incredible year for EMA [and] winning Best UK Airport this week is an amazing example of how well we are perceived by our peers in the travel industry.

"We are very proud of the titles we have been awarded this year which recognise the hard work and dedication of our great team."
