easyJet drops flights from London Luton Airport

14/12/2009

Budget airline easyJet (www.easyjet.com) has dropped a fifth of its flights from Luton Airport following a dispute with the airport's management.

Going are flights from Luton to Athens, Cagliari in Sardinia and Vienna. The airline is also scaling back frequencies on other routes from the airport.

The news of the cutbacks follows easyJet's confirmation that it is to completely withdraw from East Midland's airport from January 5.

The airline announced its decision to pull out of the airport some time ago but continued selling flights while talks with the airport's management were ongoing.

Passengers who have bought tickets from East Midlands for flights after January 5 will be offered free transfers to other easyJet flights, a free transfer to a bmibaby (www.bmibaby.com) flight or a full refund.

Those who want to continue their trip may find, however, that there is no equivalent flight available and may be out of pocket if they had already booked accommodation and other extras such as airport parking or car hire.

They are not entitled to compensation, however, as EU laws dictate that passengers are only entitled to payouts if they were given less than two weeks' notice.

Passengers who wish to transfer to another destination and/or another date should check their travel insurance to make sure they can switch their cover.

Holidaymakers based in the Midlands who had hoped to see low-cost flights from Coventry airport restarting in the future were also dealt a blow last week after the airport was wound up in the High Court.
