Egypt Balloon crash highlights need for comprehensive holiday insurance
12/05/2009
A hot air balloon crashed over the Egyptian city of Luxor in which 16 tourists were injured has emphasised the need for holidaymakers to include cover for hazardous activities in their travel insurance.
Like many pursuits available to holidaymakers, hot air balloon rides overseas are not normally included in standard travel insurance policies as they are carry a high level of risk ? as demonstrated by the crash in Luxor in April.
Holidaymakers who plan to take a balloon ride or think they might try out similar hazardous activities during their trip are advised to buy additional insurance before they leave the UK. Protection for some activities is included with insurewithease.com and cover for more hazardous pursuits ? such as hot air ballooning - is available from insurewithease for a small additional fee.
All 16 tourists in the ill-fated dawn ride over Luxor were flung from the balloon when it hit a mobile phone mast and crashed to the ground.
Two of the tourists sustained serious injuries, which included a fractured spine and a broken collar bone. One had to be flown back to the UK for treatment.
Insurewithease travel insurance includes up to £5m for emergency medical care and repatriation costs, plus up to £5,000 for death, £30,000 for loss of limbs or sight and £30,000 for permanent disablement.
