16/12/2010
Many people decide to enjoy New Year abroad, whether it's in a spectacular European city or in warmer climates in the southern hemisphere. Big cities all over the world have equally big celebrations to see in the New Year in style.
The Eiffel Tower in Paris is the setting for an impressive lights display, while the Champs-Elysees is the place to head if you are looking for a great party atmosphere. You can get a pretty decent view of the Eiffel Tower from the Champs-Elysees. The Metro offers free services on New Year's Eve, but it could get quite busy so you should consider walking to the festivities.
Prague is a beautiful city to enjoy at any time of year and it's a great place to celebrate New Year's Eve. Head down to the river or to the Old Town Square to enjoy the midnight fireworks. If you are enjoying an evening meal in one of Prague's restaurants, they may offer you a bottle of champagne to take with you whilst you watch the fireworks.
Times Square in New York City is famous for its New Year's Eve entertainment. Around one million people attend the celebrations. Each year, the New Year's Eve Ball descends on the square - a tradition dating back to 1907.
Sydney has one of the most impressive New Year's Eve fireworks displays. The boats in the harbour are illuminated with colourful lights, and at midnight, Sydney Harbour Bridge appears to explode as rockets take off from the structure.
If you are spending New Year in South Africa, the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town will be the venue for live music and street performers, and of course an obligatory firework display at midnight.
Wherever you are spending New Year abroad, try to book your accommodation in advance so that you are close to the action. Arrive at your destination a day or two before New Year's Eve so that you have time to acclimatise before the main event.
