Enter online competition to win a backpackers trip to Australia

01/04/2010

Tourism Australia has launched a competition on the social networking website Facebook, offering the winner a free backpacking holiday in Australia including a month's work placement in the Australian outback.

To enter the Great Boomerang Throw, contestants need to 'throw' a virtual' boomerang to one of their contacts on Facebook. The winner is the one who throws the boomerang furthest.

Players start the chain by throwing a boomerang to a Facebook friend, who in turn passes it on to one of their friends with the boomerang travelling from person to person across the world.

The game allows players to include a personal message to convince people to throw the boomerang on, and the idea is that users will end up relying on the generosity of strangers to help build the chain and ultimately win them the trip to Australia.

Users can watch the flight of the boomerang via a map showing its progress.

The winner receives a lengthy holiday in Australia, including a month's work placement at the Prairie Hotel in southern Australia.

The prize includes Aussie experiences such as swimming with dolphins at Adelaide's Glenelg beach, a Groovy Grape Barossa Valley wine tour and spending a couple of days on Kangaroo Island with koalas, seals, echidnas and errm, kangaroos.

The new game has been added to the Facebook page as part of Tourism Australia's ongoing strategy to promote the Working Holiday Visa programme, which allows 18 to 30 year olds to travel and work in Australia for up to 12 months.

Long-stay travel insurance for backpackers and those taking extended working holidays in Australia and elsewhere is available from insurewithease.com

The competition closes on 30 April 2010.
