Expert slams "free" travel insurance

29/10/2007

Travellers who rely on free travel insurance provided by their credit card company are dicing with disaster, it has been claimed.

According to figures from financial comparison website MoneyExpert.com, around 75 per cent of credit cards offer free travel insurance to cardholders.

However, according to Sean Gardner of MoneyExpert.com, these often provide low levels of cover that could prove inadequate in the event of a serious accident.

Some cards in particular offer cover of less than £350,000 - when in fact a reliable policy should be "closer to the £1 million-mark," he said.

News of the MoneyExpert.com's findings come in the wake of a report from the Financial Ombudsman Service showing that one in eight travel complaints they receive are related to free travel insurance policies.

In response, the Ombudsman has advised travellers to closely study the terms of their travel insurance before embarking on a trip.
