Families opting to take cars abroad, says expert
13/08/2008
An increasing number of families are opting to take their cars abroad, one expert has said.
According to the Daily Telegraph newspaper, the popularity of family motoring holidays is increasing, with Brits taking their cars on cross-channel ferries to European destinations.
This trend has provided a boost to the ferry industry and P&O has ordered two new ships worth £285 million to accommodate the extra custom.
Its first new ship will be delivered in December 2009, while the second boat will come into operation in September 2011.
With both ships functioning P&O will be able to handle more than 3,000 cars per day - a 20 per cent increase on its current capacity.
A spokesperson for the firm told the paper: "There was a downturn in people taking their cars abroad, but this seems to have reversed as people get disillusioned with airport hassle."
The Post Office's recent Motoring on the Continent survey, found that Spain is the cheapest nation to buy diesel fuel and the most cost-effective place to hire a car.
Holidaymakers taking their cars abroad should be aware that their UK insurance policies might not cover them for driving outside Britain.
