FCO advises against sailing in parts of the Seychelles due to piracy
01/10/2010
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) is advising against all but essential sailing in the Seychelles Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), twenty miles beyond the inner granitic islands. This area of the Seychelles is prone to piracy. Sail boats are more likely to be attacked by pirates than other vessels. Land-based locations are currently unaffected by piracy.
The Seychelles archipelago is a popular destination for holidaymakers that want a taste of paradise. The islands are also popular destinations for couples looking for a romantic retreat - many couples choose to have their honeymoon in the Seychelles.
The Seychelles consists of 115 islands, which are renowned for their stunning beaches - perfect white sand dips in crystal clear water. And they're a great place to go snorkelling or diving due to the surrounding ocean's rich marine life.
The main islands are Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, but many of the other islands are ideal holiday destinations. Some accommodation in the Seychelles is pure luxury, where opulently furnished villas look out onto stunning ocean or forest views.
In spite of the FCO warnings against sailing in certain parts of the Seychelles, holidaymakers shouldn't be put off travelling to the islands. The FCO has reported that there is a low threat of terrorism in the Seychelles.
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office provides travel advice for countries all over the world, and if a situation changes, they update the advice quickly. Before travelling to a country, read through the travel advice for your chosen destination to find out about any terrorist or security threats, natural disasters or any other situations that might affect your holiday.
