FCDO advises tourists to stay safe in Australia during the Ashes Tour

15/11/2010

If you are travelling to Australia over the next few months to enjoy the Ashes Tour (not to mention the warmer climate), then follow the Foreign Office's travel advice for Australia to stay safe while you are away.

Know how to prepare for the Ashes Tour and look after yourself and your possessions whilst you are away. As soon as you book your trip make sure you buy comprehensive travel insurance. Travel insurance can cover the cost of medical treatment, cancellation, lost luggage and much more. Your travel insurer should provide 24 hour assistance if you run into trouble abroad. Make sure you take their emergency assistance telephone number with you.

To get into Australia to enjoy the Ashes Tour, you will need to apply for a visa from the Department of Immigration & Citizenship.

If you plan to drive in Australia to travel between games during the Ashes Tour, you can do so on a valid UK driving licence. You will need to carry your driving licence and passport with you at all times whilst you are driving. The good news for Brits is that Australians drive on the left-hand side of the road! Australia is a big country. If you are planning a long driving day, allow plenty of time for breaks.

If you need to carry ID to prove your age, you can apply for a proof of age card so that you don't have to carry your passport or driving licence when you hit the bars to celebrate the Ashes Tour. This will protect your important documents from getting lost or stolen. You can buy a proof of age card from Roads & Traffic Authority (RTA) offices around Australia.

When you are enjoying a game during the Ashes Tour, remember to be conscious of your personal belongings - keep your camera and wallet hidden when they're not in use in order to keep thieves at bay.

Whilst taking time out from the Ashes Tour, take advantage of Australia's beaches, but remember to swim safely. If you swim in the sea, stay between the red and yellow flags.

The English cricket team will be in Australia from now until 6 February 2011.
