FCO research reveals one third of skiers do not have ski insurance

15/11/2012

With research showing that as many as 2 out of 5 winter sports enthusiasts have been injured at least once and that as many as a third don't have travel insurance with cover for skiing and snowboarding, we're highlight the importance of being prepared.

Before you hit the slopes this winter make sure you are physically fit and you have ski insurance to cover your winter sports activities.

The research just published by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and ABTA has revealed that people taking their first ski trip are at a higher risk from serious injury because they are not in shape when they hit the slopes.

It also reveals that 2 out of 5 regular skiers and snowboarders have injured themselves on the ski slopes at least once.

  • 31% suffered a significant injury such as a leg break or muscle tear
  • 73% of injuries were caused by a fall
  • 20% of injuries were caused by colliding with someone else on the slope
  • 38% of those surveyed also risked serious head injuries by not wearing a helmet

Getting the right ski insurance

ABTA research has also shown that a third of winter sports holiday makers do not take out travel insurance which includes cover for skiing and snowboarding (ski insurance), putting themselves at risk of incurring large medical bills if they are injured on the slopes.

Buying specific ski insurance or adding winter sports cover to an existing travel insurance policy means that your travel insurance cover is extended to include medical treatment as a result of being injured whilst on the slopes, including recovery from the piste. Standard travel insurance will not cover this.

Ski insurance also includes additional cover for your ski equipment, ski lessons and lift pass.
