FCO warns of forest fire risk in Spain
02/08/2013
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has recently updated its travel advice for British nationals heading to Spain to warn of the risk of forest fires.
The advice highlights that forest fires occur frequently over the summer months in both the Spanish Islands and mainland Spain, particularly in southern areas.
Holidaymakers are advised to take extra care when visiting woodland or driving through wooded areas.
When in a woodland area you should:
- Avoid smoking, or if you do smoke, ensure that cigarettes are properly extinguished
- Don't light barbeques
- Don't leave empty bottles or other glass behind
UK holidaymakers should also be aware that starting a forest fire in Spain is treated as a criminal offence regardless of whether it was accidental.
If you do see the start of a forest fire in Spain you should call the emergency services immediately on 112 (The EU wide number for contacting local emergency services).
Wherever you are going in Spain, whether to woodland areas and mountains or just enjoying some sun, sea and sand, travel insurance is vital. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise that you buy travel insurance every time you travel to Spain to cover the cost of any unexpected medical treatment whilst you are there.
As well as cover for Emergency Medical Expenses and Repatriation, travel insurance can also provide you with Cancellation Cover, in case you are unable to travel on your holiday to Spain due to illness, redundancy or your house becoming uninhabitable. And cover for the financial failure of one of your holiday suppliers.
