Financial Ombudsman warns about posting holiday details on Facebook

05/05/2015

The Financial Ombudsman Service has warned holiday makers that comments, photos and location check-ins posted on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram could be used by burglars to target their empty homes whilst they are away.

Not only can posting details of your holiday increase the chances of your home being targeted, it could also jeopardise your home insurance.

Most home insurance policies require policy holders to take reasonable care to protect their property and some insurers could take the view that posting details of when the property will be empty on social media sites is putting your home at risk.

It is particularly important not to post details of your holiday dates and how long you will be away for.
There’s no point going to the trouble of cancelling the milk or newspapers, or using security lights whilst you are away if you then post photos and comments on social media which tells everyone that you are on holiday and your home is empty.
