Flying still the safest way to travel

21/01/2008

Aeroplanes are still the safest way to travel despite worries over the recent crash at Heathrow, reports the Belfast Telegraph.

The newspaper points out that Thursday's crash is the first serious incident at Heathrow airport for 20 years, which is Europe's busiest airport.

It is also noted it was the first ever crash involving a Boeing 777 plane, which went into operation in 1997.

The chances of being involved in a plane crash are about one in 11 million and you are at greater risk when driving to the airport, according to the FearlessFlight website.

Only one passenger was held in hospital overnight after the crash on Thursday when a plane lost power to its engines and was forced into an emergency landing.

There were 136 passengers and 16 crew members on board the Boeing 777 flight from Beijing when it crashed.

Operations at Heathrow have returned to normal after some delays and cancellations to short-haul flights.
