Follow the in crowd and celebrate the New Year in New York
15/12/2009
The Big Apple is the place to welcome in 2010, according to flight comparison website Skyscanner (www.skyscanner.net).
It says that, based on user flight searches, New York is the most popular venue for New Year's Eve this year, no doubt due to the great exchange rate and falling hotel prices.
Next most popular was Tenerife, probably because the sunshine island offers a welcome break from the winter back home, followed by perennial favourites Paris and Amsterdam.
London was the fifth most popular search for New Year breaks, though with Alicante and Malaga scooping sixth and seven places it seems that the majority of people heading abroad for New Year's Eve will be off to Spain.
Of course Edinburgh's Hogmanay is still attracting the crowds and the Scottish capital was the eighth most popular city.
The number of people searching for flights to Geneva before the end of the year suggests not that the Swiss city is a great place to party, but rather than many Britons will be celebrating New Year's Eve on the slopes.
Last but not least, the Irish capital Dublin - the city that gave birth to stag and hen weekends - limped in in only tenth place this year.
Anyone going to Dublin to raise a glass to 2010 will no doubt be relieved that in spite of its belt-tightening measures, the Irish government has announced a reduction in excise duty on alcohol. Cheers!!
