Foreign Office gives Mexico the all-clear - but warns tourists to take out holiday insurance

Hotels in Mexico are offering free holidays to tourists who catch swine flu in their resorts and holidaymakers can be reassured that if they do get sick they will be covered by their holiday insurance since the Foreign Office has lifted its ban on non-essential travel to the country.

Three hotel chains, Real Resorts, Dreams and Secret, are offering three years of free holidays to any guests who contract the flu virus within 14 days of visiting their properties in the once popular resorts of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

The latest swine flu outbreak has killed more than 60 people worldwide so far and caused 25 hotels in Cancun to close, but the Foreign Office in the UK says the number of new reported cases in Mexico is declining.

It warns British visitors to continue to follow local advice on precautions to take to avoid exposure to the flu virus and to take out 'comprehensive travel and medical insurance' before leaving the UK.

Though business to Mexico has slumped about 80% since the outbreak of flu in April, hotels are trying to tempt holidaymakers back with offers as low as £59ppn, all-inclusive, according to latest reports on Times Online.
