Foreign Office warns holidaymakers to buy travel insurance

04/08/2009

Flights to Spain have resumed following last week's bomb attack on the holiday resort of Mallorca but the Foreign Office has warned there is still a 'high threat from terrorism' across the country and is advising holidaymakers to take out comprehensive travel insurance.

Spanish authorities shut Palma airport and Majorca's port for several hours after a bomb exploded in the resort of Palma Nova. The closure disrupted around 300 flights and caused widespread inconvenience for British holidaymakers.

Thomson, the UK's biggest tour operator, had 4 flights heading to Majorca when the blockade was imposed. Two had to return to the UK and 2 diverted to other Spanish islands.

Passengers whose holidays were delayed may be able to claim compensation from their travel insurance depending on their level of cover.

Holiday companies say flights to Majorca are now back to normal, but the Foreign Office is warning holidaymakers travelling to Spain to be vigilant. It says: ""Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

""Disruptions from real or hoax terror attempts can be expected and a high level of alert is being maintained.""
