Holiday bargains to Greece for summer 2010

27/04/2010

Greece's financial meltdown is expected to lead to cut-price holidays this summer as the country looks to earn more income from overseas visitors.

The country is hoping for a bail-out from the European Union but with the requested £35billion rescue package being blocked by Germany it seems Greece's financial troubles are far from over.

Travel association ABTA said this could mean good news for British holidaymakers as it could force hoteliers and apartment and villa owners to cut their prices to attract more visitors.

For the past couple of years Greece has been losing holidaymakers to non-euro destinations such as Egypt and Turkey, both of which have been offering better value for money, especially for families.

ABTA spokeswoman Francis Tuke said that although the Greek crisis was not likely to make the euro any less expensive, there would be more holiday bargains to Greece and the Greek islands.

Ms Tuke said: The current debt crisis will not affect the value of the euro in the short-term but holidaymakers can expect plenty of deals as the Greeks try to lure us over there to give them much-needed revenue.""

Tour operators' prices have not been lowered yet and there don't appear to be any exceptional offers to Greece at the moment but travel experts predict there will be lots of last-minute discounting closer to the summer peak.

Holidaymakers booking tailormade packages or booking their accommodation direct with accommodation providers may find it easier to negotiate discounts or added value such as a room upgrade or free meals.
