Holiday rentals business goes bust
25/01/2010
Holidaymakers who have booked accommodation through the now defunct Apartments Abroad should contact their travel agent to arrange a refund or alternative accommodation.
Apartments Abroad, which had more than 20,000 properties in over 100 countries, and its subsidiary Resort Taxis ceased trading last week after efforts to sell the loss-making business failed.
A statement on the company's website www.apartmentsabroad.co.uk reads: It is with deep regret that Apartments Abroad Limited has ceased to trade as of 21 January 2010 and shall be placed into Liquidation shortly.
"Any enquiries should be directed to Begbies Traynor at [email protected]"
Apartments Abroad sold mainly through tour operators and travel agencies. Holidaymakers who booked through the latter will be protected by their tour operator; those who booked only the accommodation through travel agents should go to their agent to make alternative arrangements.
It is understood that rival bed bank Getabed.co.uk has stepped in to take over all of the company's bookings so customers who have yet to travel should still be able to continue with their holidays.
Customers who book accommodation-only direct with a supplier are not normally guaranteed a refund if the business goes bust however. Only those who book accommodation as part of a flight-inclusive package through a travel agent or a tour operator are given financial protection.
The best way to protect your money when booking DIY packages is to take out comprehensive travel agents with cover against company insolvencies.
Meanwhile another accommodation-only specialist Youtravel.com has expanded adding long-haul destinations to its portfolio. The company has added 200 hotels in Thailand and about 300 in the United States to its programme.
