Holidaymakers advised of travel insurance rules

29/08/2008

Holidaymakers heading to Europe this year have been advised of their medical care entitlements and how their travel insurance will affect this.

According to the Earth Times news website in Belgium and France those travellers with a European Union health insurance card should be aware that they will still need to pay their medical costs.

However, when they return to the UK they will be reimbursed by their insurance company fully providing they have kept all the correct documentation.

It adds that the card is an essential for travellers, as it gives them access to medical assistance quicker.

Furthermore, with the card any traveller who has travel insurance in the UK will be entitled to the same level of healthcare as a local person.

"Another important point is that the card is only valid for medical procedures performed in public health institutions and not in private clinics," advises the Earth Times.

Holidaymakers heading to Europe are increasingly doing so by boat, one expert says.

According to the Port of Dover ferry travel in now "back in vogue" travel website World First reports.
