Holidaymakers are ditching the plane for the train
09/04/2008
Holidaymakers increasing travelling by train rather than plane, one industry expert has claimed this week.
According to Virgin Trains, which operates routes from London Euston and Birmingham New Street throughout the UK, more people are now considering train travel in a more positive way.
This trend echoes the habits of mainland Europeans, who currently use this mode of transport far more frequently than UK residents.
"More and more people are choosing it as a means to get to destinations they might have previously gone to by car or plane," said Philippa Richardson, communications manager for Virgin Trains.
She added: "I think that people will certainly look at the option of going by rail in a more favourable light."
Last month, the London Assembly took steps to improve its green credentials.
The body, which holds the mayor of London to account, passed a motion banning its members from travelling to Paris, Brussels or anywhere in mainland Britain on assembly business by plane.
Darren Johnson, who spearheaded the motion, explained that taking short-haul flights rather than "clear practical rail alternatives" was not a "sustainable" option.
