Holidaymakers are turning green
06/11/2008
Britons are increasingly looking for hotels with sound eco-friendly credentials, according to a new Europe-wide survey.
When choosing a hotel for their holiday, tourists prefer staying somewhere that uses sustainable energy sources, efficient electrical appliances and water saving appliances such as low-flow toilets.
Hotel guests are also more inclined to do their bit for the planet, even when they are on holiday, according to the survey.
The vast majority say they turn off lights when leaving their hotel rooms, reuse hotel towels more than once and switch off electrical equipment such as in-room TVs at the base.
The poll of 5,000 holidaymakers found that almost a third would choose eco-friendly hotels, as long as they were available to book online via popular, tried and tested website.
More than half agreed that hotels should use sustainable energy such as wind or solar power and almost half said hotels should use more efficient electrical appliances like flat screen energy efficient TVs.
That said, the survey was conducted by electrical appliance manufacturer Samsung Electronics (www.samsung.com/UK), which has a definite interest in persuading hotels to upgrade to the latest hi-tech products.
Samsung Electronics Europe B2B sales and marketing director Pammi Mudhar said: Environmental awareness is on the rise and playing an increasingly significant role in the hotel booking process.""
However, although holidaymakers may prefer the idea of staying in a greener hotel, whether they actually choose a property based on its eco-principles is harder to determine.
Prices is still believed to be one of the biggest factors in determining where people go on holiday.
