Holidaymakers "not as green as some may think"

Holidaymakers are not as environmentally-conscious as some may think, says one industry expert.

Management, engineering and development consultancy Mott MacDonald claims that eco-labelling airlines will have "little influence" on whether or not holidaymakers choose to fly with them, as travellers have more pressing concerns when booking a flight.

His comments follow recommendations by a House of Commons select committee that UK airlines should adopt an eco-labelling system.

"Customers are always going to be governed by a whole range of things," said Laurence Price, a spokesperson for Mott MacDonald.

"Some of it will be price, some of it will be destination, some of it will be down to schedule, frequency, aircraft type and quality of service."

Laurence predicted that it will only be those holidaymakers who are "extremely focussed" on green issues whose decision will be swayed by eco-labelling.

Earlier this month, Flybe welcomed the select committee's recommendations and claimed that it began eco-labelling its 77 aircraft last June.
