Holidaymakers risk flying without travel insurance knowing their luggage is likely to be delayed
10/08/2009
Almost a quarter of adults would risk going on holiday without travel insurance, even though only 12% are confident their luggage will arrive on time and in good nick.
A survey by the Post Office found that Londoners were the most likely to travel without insurance, though overall 23% of the 2,000plus adults questioned said they wouldn't pay the premiums to save cash.
The Post Office said 13% of those quizzed had suffered baggage delays in the last 3 years many of whom had waited up to a week to retrieve their luggage.
Travel insurance will provide compensation for lost and delayed bags ? often paying out more than airlines for luggage that fails to turn up.
Those who are tempted to save cash by not buying insurance should bear in mind that, according to the Post Office, the contents of an average suitcase totals more than £1,000 ? with women's items costing more than men's to replace.
Insurewithease policies provide up to £3000 of cover for personal possessions, with a maximum of £250 for valuables, and up to £175 compensation for bags delayed by 24 hours or longer.
