Holidaymakers to U.S. should check travel insurance for flood cover

01/10/2009

People heading to Atlanta in the Deep South of the United States should check with their travel insurer to see if they are covered for a flood which left parts of the region under water.

Theme park Six Flags over Georgia was completely flooded after 18-inches of rain fell in one day last week. Only the peaks of the park's main rollercoaster was visible following the deluge.

While the park was expecting to be up and running again within a few days, there is likely to be extensive damage to the facilities as well as to other tourist attractions in the region.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Atlanta's Assistant Commissioner for Tourism in Georgia Kevin Langston said tourists should not be badly affected as most businesses were working normally.

However, holidaymakers are best advised to check with their tour operator or hotel before travelling and contact their travel insurance to check if they are covered for any necessary cancellation.

Floods are covered by insurewithease Gold travel insurance policy, which pays up to £1,000 for alternative accommodation for holidaymakers struck by a catastrophe, such as a flood.

Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine said more than 20,000 buildings had been flooded, causing at least $500m of damage. Most of the devastation is north and west of the city of Atlanta.

Although the water has now receded, layers of thick mud have been left behind by the worst storm to hit Atlanta in 100 years.

Officials say it will be weeks before the tons of rubbish collected by the storms is cleared up.
