Holidaymakers want more than lying on a beach

21/01/2008

British people are looking for more exciting holidays than lying on a beach, according to Holiday Which?.

The travel advice magazine said that more people are looking for experiences from their holiday, rather than the usual beach holiday.

Clare Lilley, head of research at Holiday Which?, said: "People are going on maybe three or four holidays a year, and they don't always just want to lie on a beach."

"They're looking for things like bungee jumping, skydiving, canoeing, and horse riding."

Ms Lilley said that the package holiday market is still booming, normally for families who want a hassle-free holiday, saying there were 19 million package holidays taken last year.

Popular destinations for 2008 will include eastern Europe, and Ms Lilley said that Bulgaria and Turkey are "on the agenda a lot more".

The Association of British travel Agents (ABTA) said that Portugal and Turkey have been doing well in early bookings for this year.

Other hotspots include Beijing for the Olympics, Singapore for the first Formula 1 grand prix and Australia for the Rugby League World Cup, according to ABTA.
