Holidays to paradise island still protected by travel insurance
24/07/2009
Holidaymakers will not be forced to cancel holidays to Bali or the rest of Indonesia following the recent bombing in the capital Jakarta. Tour operators are still flying people to Bali and the Foreign Office has decided against a travel ban, meaning visitors will still be covered by their travel insurance.
Tourists are being warned to steer clear of the centre of Jakarta following the bombing of two hotels in the city, but the Foreign Office is not advising holidaymakers to stay away from the whole of Indonesia.
About 150,000 Britons visit the destination each year, the majority of whom head for Bali, which is more than 600 miles from Jakarta. Bali itself was targeted by terrorists in 2002 and 2005. More than 200 people were killed in several bomb attacks, resulting in a Foreign Office ban on travel to the island.
After the latest bombings in Jakarta the Foreign Office is advising people visiting Indonesia to 'exercise caution at all times'.
The advice on its website states: ""Terrorists have shown that they have the means and motivation to carry out successful attacks in Indonesia. Venues known to be frequented by foreign visitors and expatriates, including beach resorts, bars and restaurants, are potentially attractive targets for such groups.""
