Homeowners "should lock doors to avoid theft"
20/08/2008
Households wanting to avoid having to claim on their insurance policies should ensure their doors are locked this summer, experts have advised.
Police in Yeovil have warned residents to be extra vigilant in locking and closing their doors and windows securely; they should also shy away from leaving valuable items on display, reports the Yeovil Express.
The crime busters added that home owners may want to consider investing in additional security measures, such as burglar alarms.
PC Brett Gitsham told the local newspaper: "We know that when we have good weather, people can be lulled into a false sense of security and leave windows open at night or while they are enjoying the sunshine in their gardens and those are windows of opportunity to thieves."
He noted that being burgled is a "stress and inconvenience" which people can avoid by taking simple steps to discourage thieves from entering their homes.
Those who have taken out home insurance may soon be able to benefit from a new crime map which the Metropolitan police is developing.
On this map, home owners will be able to see which areas are most afflicted by burglaries and vehicle theft, reports the Guardian newspaper.
