Honeymoon is a chance to "recover, relax and bond"
29/02/2008
Honeymoons are a chance for newlyweds to "recover, relax and bond" after taking their nuptials, according to one industry expert.
Editor of Australia's Bride to Be magazine, Amelia Bloomfield, made the claims when explaining to the Sydney Morning Herald how honeymooning habits have changed.
"In many parts of Europe around the 16th century it was traditional for couples to consume a honey-based wine called mead for the first month of marriage, a practice that ensured fertility and good spirits," she told the paper.
However, Bloomfield states that the modern honeymoon is about recouping after spending, on average, one-and-a-half years planning the costly big day.
According to a survey by Bride to Be carried out in 2006, 25 per cent of Aussie couples choose to holiday in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia Cambodia or Vietnam.
South Pacific Islands, such as Fiji and Vanatu, were also desired honeymoon destinations for 24 per cent of brides to be.
Earlier this month, wedding website hitched.co.uk claimed that honeymooners are now looking for something different.
A spokesperson for the website said that two-centre breaks have increased in popularity, enabling newlyweds to enjoy the excitement of an African safari and then a beach break in the Maldives all in one trip.
