Hotel prices expected to stay low next year
28/10/2009
Prices of hotel rooms in major cities around the world have plunged this year and hoteliers are expected to keep rates low next year to try to encourage visitors.
A report by hotels.com claims that travellers can now bag rooms at five-star hotels in major cities around the world for just £100 per room per night.
Room rates in New York have fallen by almost 30 per cent this year. The average cost of a room is now £120 per night, compared with £175 this time last year.
Even with the price cuts, the Big Apple remains the most expensive city in America for visitors. Other cities have also slashed prices.
Gambling mecca Las Vegas has cut its average hotel rates from £72 to £51 per night, according to hotels.com.
Elsewhere in the world room rates have dropped by as much or even more than in the United States.
Rates in Beijing have fallen 38 per cent; in Dubai they are down 28 per cent and in Bangkok prices have dropped 24 per cent on average.
Hotel prices in the UK have fallen less this year, probably due to the number of people holidaying at home. The average cost of a room remains at a relatively high £93 per night.
Travellers looking for the best deal should ask hoteliers for their lowest rate, not the rack rate which is a hotel's published price but not necessarily the price it expects to achieve for a room.
A good tip is to try websites like laterooms.com and hotels.com to find last minute discounted rates.
