If you're on holiday in France, check out the Bastille Day celebrations

14/07/2010

Today, cities, towns and villages throughout France will be celebrating Bastille Day. Bastille Day is a celebration of the destruction of the Bastille on 14 July in 1789, which marked the beginning of the French Revolution. The Bastille was a prison in Paris, so the capital is one of the best places to experience Bastille Day celebrations.

If you are on holiday in France, get ready for a day of partying and an explosive night of fireworks. The Champs-Elysées will host a parade with jets flying overhead in formation. After sunset, fireworks can be viewed from the Champ-de-Mars, which will light up the Eiffel Tower.

Fireworks are not the only hot tradition for Bastille Day - French firehouses open their doors for the day, where firemen will be hosting a range of entertainment. Firemen's Bastille Day Balls are taking place throughout Paris, where you can rub shoulders with a drunken fireman! Most of the balls are free or cost just a few Euros on the door and they are either held indoors or outdoors depending on the venue. Les Arènes de Lutèce will host a spectacular ball with gymnastic displays and firemen in spandex!

Clubs, bars and restaurants throughout Paris will host their own events late into the night. If you are a couple on holiday in France, then you could enjoy a more romantic affair on a dining cruise along the Seine. As the cruise comes to a close, you'll get the chance to catch a great view of the fireworks from the boat.

In La Rochelle you will find traditional food markets and the fireworks will be set off over the sea near the port. Fireworks in Lyon will be set off on Fourvière Hill and Marseille will hold a ball in the Place d'Horloge, complete with a live orchestra. Other great places to experience Bastille Day are Bordeaux and Nice.
