Increase in Brits travelling to Jamaica

11/12/2007

More and more UK holidaymakers are opting to take trips to Jamaica, new figures show.

According to figures from the Jamaican Tourism Ministry, 125,000 Britons travelled to Jamaica between January and August.

This represents a rise of 9.3 per cent compared with the same period a year ago, holidayextras.com reports.

The Caribbean island is also proving more of a draw for travellers from all over Europe, with visitors from the EU up 15.4 per cent in the same period.

News of the findings comes after reports in the Jamaica Observer this week said that a consortium of businessmen is looking to launch the Caribbean's first-ever low-cost airline.

Ian Burns, head representative of the group, said that the airline could boost tourist arrivals by one million within five years of its launch and that key to this is the development of Kingston's Manley International Airport as an international hub for the Caribbean.
