Koh Phangan Full Moon Party revellers injured in boat crash
29/06/2010
Two speedboats taking tourists from a Koh Phangan Full Moon Party in Thailand collided due to bad weather. Heavy rain and thunderstorms led to poor visibility. Several British travellers were among the 42 people that were injured in the incident. Many of the injured passengers were taken to hospital on Koh Samui and on the mainland.
Most of the injuries were minor and many suffered from shock. Passengers were wearing life jackets which probably saved their lives, and many of them were drunk as they were on their way back from the Koh Phangan Full Moon Party. A search and rescue operation was launched when the drivers of the two boats went missing.
Every month around 25,000 revellers visit the beach at Haad Rin to experience a Koh Phangan Full Moon Party. The parties are popular with western backpackers visiting Thailand. Haad Rin was made famous in Alex Garland's novel 'The Beach'.
As the name suggests, the parties take place around the time of the full moon every month. Revellers gather to watch the moon rise and then dance the night away to pumping tunes provided by resident and international DJs.
If you plan to attend a Koh Phangan Full Moon Party, make sure you wear sensible shoes. If you try to boogie barefoot then you could injure yourself on a broken bottle. Be sensible with alcohol and stay away from drugs. The parties are well policed, and Thai prisons are not pretty places. When you are travelling to and from the party by boat, remember to wear a life jacket at all times.
Before you leave for Thailand, make sure you buy travel insurance. If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, travel insurance can cover the cost of potentially expensive medical bills. Insurewithease.com has a range of affordable travel insurance policies available, including cover for backpackers.
